As a result, small amounts of antibiotics may be present in some vaccines. Because some antibiotics can cause severe allergic reactions in those children allergic to them (like hives, swelling at the back of the throat, and low blood pressure), some parents are concerned that antibiotics contained in vaccines might be harmful. However, antibiotics most likely to cause severe allergic reactions (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins and sulfa drugs) are not used in vaccine production, and therefore are not contained in vaccines.

"Examples of antibiotics used during vaccine manufacture include neomycin, polymyxin B, streptomycin and gentamicin. Some antibiotics used in vaccine production are present in the vaccine, either in very small amounts or they are undetectable. For example, antibiotics are used in some production methods for making inactivated influenza virus vaccines. They are used to reduce bacterial growth in eggs during processing steps, because eggs are not sterile products. The antibiotics that are used are reduced to very small or undetectable amounts during subsequent purification steps. The very small amounts of antibiotics contained in vaccines have not been clearly associated with severe allergic reactions."

http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/VaccineSafety/ucm187810.htm

So of the 3 ways an antibiotic can hurt you:

(1) Side effects would not happen from trace amounts

(2) Creating more bacterial resistance would not happen from trace amounts

(3) Allergic reactions are addressed in the CDC article, generally won't happen from trace amounts and I believe that the screening questions asked before giving vaccines include allergies to the antibiotics that might be present in trace amounts. It's an important ...Thank you for noting this. It's an important sub-topic that I wish I could've devoted more space to in the body of my blog. Nearly 10 years ago when my husband rotated through Head & Neck Cancer at Barnes, about half the people there were smokers, and the other half had developed cancer from some oral HPV. My understanding is that it's now even worse and these cancers are quickly being viewed as "HPV" cancers rather than "Smoker" cancers now. If you run a control+Find search you can see in another comment above a great tidbit from a friend of mine who is a mom and an oncologist, discussing how horrific these deaths are and how horrible she'd feel if she had to watch one of her sons die that way, knowing there had been something she could have done to protect them but she'd opted not to. Me too. Not everyone is willing to bust their butt like my husband does. But this debate isn't pediatrician-to-pediatrician. This debate involves a clear, essentially unanimous medical consensus among all our leading experts. See, also cited above, this, this, and this. When you vaccinate on time, you're not "just" trusting your pedi; you're trusting all the top experts on topics including virology, microbiology, statistics, epidemiology, pathogenesis ... and of course, medicine and pediatrics. We're talking the guys who went to Harvard and the like, and got MD's and PhD's and devoted their careers to research, which generally pays much less than private practice. These tend to be, FYI, super nice and super nerdy guys (and gals) - and most of them are also parents."

Do you really think I got my references by googling? I could not possibly make it more clear that my father, my husband, and Seattle Mama Doc pediatrician Wendy Swanson provided me most of my references. Not a single one is from a google search. NOT ONE. You might be able to find them by google since unlike other things I examined, they are available online. But you will find a lot of other nonsense while you're looking.

You can peruse the rest of these comments if you're truly interested in exploring the issue of whether the idea that vaccines are all one big conspiracy theory is, in fact, a realistic one. I cannot believe we live in a world where people ACTUALLY come to the conclusion to NOT vaccinate their children. . They are living in a Utopian world of constant privilege. My bad for having a brain and trying to make some educated decision about vaccines and any other medical decision.

I love how you demean the googler....just how did you happen to come by these wonderful references? I guess you subscribe to all of these peer reviewed journals and read them all yourself. I am not even an "anti vax", just a mom trying to make the best decision for her children.

If drug companies are so great then why are there so many lawsuits regarding side effects of medications/vaccines. I am not by any means saying that all of these lawsuits are warranted. Your profession of lawyers then make millions suing the drug companies for their faulty products. It does not take rocket science to see that money is sometimes the bottom line. The whole system is broken and tainted by special interest and money. If your mission of this blog post is to get people who are "on the fence" in the pro vaccine mode, then I will have to say you have failed in my opinion. We are seeing a rise in HPV related squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx in younger non-smokers, mostly in ages 40-50 but I've seen patients in their 20-30's as well. It also seems to be more common in white males for whatever reason. The vaccines only protect against 2 or 4 subtypes of HPV which are most commonly associated with cancer and papillomatosis, there are dozens out there so it obviously doesn't provide 100% guarantee. But get your kids (boys and girls) vaccinated early, HPV is ubiquitous and you never know when or where you might be exposed. Head and neck cancers are terrible, no treatment options are great and all can leave you with some degree of permanent functional impairment with swallowing, speaking, and breathing.

Link to CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/hpv/vac-faqs.htmAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1762736094770946238.post-47588460358010716072013-10-17T21:31:45.318-07:002013-10-17T21:31:45.318-07:00Thank you Jennifer. You could also set up a similar fund for people who have a severe allergic reaction to peanuts or other MUCH more common allergens, since there is nobody to sue. If you peruse these comments you'll see many physicians say they've held the hands of too many parents watching their child die of a vaccine-prevantable injury. Clearly there were plenty of diseases in the world before we had vaccines. I'm glad that you and your siblings seem to be a healthy crew, but so are plenty of vaccinated children and people, my family included. We stay healthy by eating fresh non-processed foods, exercising regularly, and not engaging in unhealthy habits like alcohol, tobacco, promiscuity, etc. Also, it was a lot safer not to immunize before. If you look at the CDC website you can track diseases by year and see that more outbreaks are occurring in recent years due to the failure to maintain herd immunity levels of vaccination. Couple that with the fact that our communities are increasingly international - especially out here in Boston - and you've got yourself a much more dangerous situation than you did 20-30 years ago. The nursing profession as a whole supports vaccines.
